Hosting artists at field research sites is one way to encourage fertile collaboration and cross-pollination. But some artist residency programs also host scientists for the same reasons. Requirements for these residencies vary from no expectations, to participation in the community, to presentation of work.

Scientists often visit field research stations to write and reflect in an inspiring environment, rather than to conduct actual science. Artist residency programs might offer a similar option that also provides a potentially valuable connection to a different community.
